D.R. Niraj Adhikari , 4 February 2016 - Malik Clyburn, 19, of Sarasota, Florida, surrendered himself to authority’s hours after hitting his relative Michael Wright, 48, while driving his Kia Optima on a suspended license. ’I think I took live of my family member,’ Clyburn said after turning himself in just after midnight on Thursday.
Schafer said that the young man would have faced a misdemeanor for driving on a suspended license, but now will be charged with a felony for leaving the scene of an accident causing death.  ’He wasn’t drinking, he wasn’t on any type of medication, he wasn’t on any type of drugs,’ Schafer told ABC 7.

Wright died from his injuries at the hospital early Wednesday morning. ’He couldn’t live with himself after he saw that video,’ Schafer said, according to the Bradenton Herald. The relationship between Clyburn and Wright was not immediately clear, though WTSP reported that the men were cousins.

Clyburn was described as ’scared’ in the aftermath of the incident and afraid of going to prison because of his suspended license. Police said that he was advised by family to turn himself in and was ’very remorseful’.

The teenager was released from jail after posting $20,120 bond on Thursday. When leaving jail he was asked by reporters if he wanted to apologize to the family of the victim.’ They are my family I am sorry,’ he said.

The accident occurred around 8.45pm in Sarasota on Tuesday, when Wright was wheeling himself across a major intersection. Video taken from a red-light camera shows a car speeding through an intersection and hitting the disabled man, who police say was crossing when he shouldn’t have been.

Clyburn, who according to his FACEBOOK attends the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, had just picked up snacks from a convenience store before heading to watch a basketball game with his friends.  He went through a yellow light during the crash and did not slow down or stop as his relative was thrown far from the scene of the collision
