killer dubbed the 'new Jihadi John' sounds more British than Mohammed Emwazi, according to a phonetics expert. British intelligence agencies are probing the latest horrific ISIS execution video which shows a masked man with an apparent English accent threatening to attack the UK before gunning down four 'British spies'. Jane Setter, Professor of Phonetics at the University of Reading, said: "This man is closer to Southern Standard British English, which is the standard across the South of England, as received pronunciation used to be, than Emwazi. "This leads me to believe he either grew up in the UK, came to the UK at an earlier age than Emwazi, who entered when he was six years old, or has used English for longer in general, perhaps as a bilingual." She added: "Like Jihadi John, this speaker is using a variety of English known as Multicultural London English which developed in London among young working class speakers but is now copied over a wider area. "This speaker is less broad than Emwazi and has some features but not all of MLE. "His pronunciation features include a ‘d’ sound in ‘th’ words including ‘this’ and some evidence of flattened vowels in ‘planes’ and ‘today’ similar to Jamaican vowels though less than Jihadi John. "This speaker used a full vowel in the last syllable of ‘master’ so it sounds more like ‘masta’ than ‘master’.
